1.) What’s a Stillpoint?
At the still point of the turning world. Neither flesh nor fleshless;
Neither from nor towards; at the still point, there the dance is,
But neither arrest nor movement. And do not call it fixity,
Where past and future are gathered. Neither movement from nor towards,
Neither ascent nor decline. Except for the point, the still point,
There would be no dance, and there is only the dance.
-T.S. Eliot, The Four Quartets
2.) Do I have to be a UGA undergraduate to submit my work?
Yes. We specifically feature University of Georgia undergraduate writers and artists. That said, we hope that anyone and everyone will read our magazine, and our events are always open to the public.
3.) What types of submissions are you looking for, and how many do you accept?
You name it! We accept artwork of any medium, as well as poetry, prose, creative nonfiction, and anything that may fall outside the bounds of categorization. Likewise, there isn’t any particular subject matter, style, or tone that we prefer. We’re looking for pieces that are well-crafted, engaging, original, interesting, etc. Submissions are 100% blind, so it never hurts to send something in. To get an idea of the types of pieces we publish, you can always check out previous issues in our back-issues section.
As for how many we accept, it all depends on how many submissions we get, and how much space we have in the magazine. Unfortunately, we can’t put everything we receive into each issue, but that shouldn’t at all discourage you from submitting! Check out our guidelines here.
4.) I graduated in December; can I still submit to the spring issue?
Definitely. As long as you are an undergraduate student at some point during the school year in which the magazine is published, you’re fine to submit.
5.) How can I apply to be on staff?
Staff Applications can be found under the tab of the same name. We’ll make announcements about due dates, but we usually pick new staff members early in fall semester.
6.) Something I submitted wasn’t selected for publication. Can I send it in again next year?
You can, but there’s a chance that without any revision, it once again may not be selected. If you want to submit something again, it would be of benefit to take another look at the piece and continue revising before the next submissions deadline.
7.) Do you have any old copies of Stillpoint that I can look at?
Old issues can be found under the Past Issues tab. For copies of the magazine from even farther back, you’ll have to look up Stillpoint at the Hargrett Rare Books Collection at UGA. We’ll try to get an archive going, though, to give you glimpses of pieces from back in the day.
8.) Do you have any events apart from the magazine release?
Absolutely! Stillpoint has done literary readings, open mic nights, discussions, lectures, and more. To keep up with what’s going on this semester, keep up with us on Facebook or Twitter, or check back on this website for updates. Also, if your organization is interested in collaborating on something, let us know!
9.) Are there any other UGA or Athens publications to which I can submit my
Other publications, geared to both students and the general public, are listed on our links page. If there’s something we’ve left out, drop us an email and we’ll add it.
10.) Any way I can ask a more specific question?
Check out the staff and contact page. All general questions can go to email@example.com.
